Speed Racer

197?-197?. Car: Duh, I dunno!.
Okay, sure...this wasn't a REAL car! What gives? Well, when I was a kid, I watched this show all the time. I tried to get into it again a few years ago when it became an 'in' thing again, largely due to MTV, but it looses something over time...damn that puberty thing!!!
6-28-96: This car may be forced to move to the 'Movie Car' section! Rumor has it a 'Speed Racer' feature film is planned and that George Barris Customs is working on building the full-size, functional car!
6-29-96: It's reported that the movie is currently in 'hold' status in typical Hollywood style. Probably another case of 'money worries'.....
8-4-96: From the Speed Racer IBM PC Game, here's some stats:
Vehicle Mfr: Pops Racer; Body Type: 2 pass, 2 door retractable Hdtp coupe
Drive system: Mid-engine 2-4 WD; Top Speed: 220+ (approx)
EPA Rating (City/Hwy) 16/24
0-30: 2.64 sec; 0-60: 6.32 sec; 0-100: 11.02 sec
1/4 mile: 11.51 sec/104.3 MPH
30-0: 33.2 ft; 60-0: 132.0 ft; 90-0: 196.0 ft
Body: "Memorite" (discovered in the late '40s, a nickel/titanium alloy that can be forged into a desired shape. Should the metal be damaged, quickly raising or lowering the metal's temperture +-7 degrees will cause the metal to revert to its original shape). The white color comes not from paint, but from the Memorite itself - Memorite can be tinted in a wide range of colors, eliminating the weight added by conventional paints.
Other Features:
G-Force Compensator Unit; High-powered, air-cooled turbine engine.
Gross HP rating of 5000 at 42,000 RPM output shaft speed.
drivetrain designed by Planetary Gear Corporation; UniTire XIF (Experimental Inflatable) tire
titanium twin rotary blades can cut down obstacles in the driver's path
bullet-proof airtight canopy; headlights follow driver's left eye motion
turbothrusters drive the vehicle when it is underwater
airborne probe (operates as a low-orbit communications satellite.
Note the HP and RPMs!!! That's about 6-8 times what a normal professional drag car has..... and they easily pull 8 and 9 second 1/4 miles!!! Someone in the background info department fouled up here!!!

Spenser For Hire
No Pic Yet
198?-198?. Car: 1966 Ford Mustang
Urich's Mustang was a 66 fastback, black with black interior, 289 V-8 and 4-speed tranny. It also had Americn Racing mag wheels. If you have more info or pics of this car and would like to help improve this site...Email me!!!!

Starsky and Hutch
, also:A Limited Edition replica built by Ford
1975-1979. Car: 1976 Ford Gran Torino 460-V8
Ignoring Huggy Bear, the bad clothes and the hair, this show is kinda ok, no? Two buddy detectives drinking bad coffee and catching bad guys. You gotta wonder when Starsky had the time to upkeep this car, tho, the way he treated it on camera, you'd think it wasn't his! Jumping on the hood, slinging it around corners like it cost 50 cents.....but his true caring did show thru when the script called for it to be blown up! They used a Dodge Dart, painted the same way, as a stand-in!!! Sure, it looks close.....ya!
And again, I've no good picture to show you, so the links take you to a picture of a Torino from a Ford website, and the boys standing on the roof of the car (no respect)!
The Starsky and Hutch Torino made a special guest appearance in the original 'Dukes of Hazzard' TV movie- the one that launched the series. There's a bit where Bo and Luke round up their car drivin' buddies in a local junkyard - this Torino is driven by one of the buddies.
Ford made 1002 Starsky Torino replicas for public sale, and some are still around today, in the hands of collectors. See the picture above.
9/11/97- The new pictures above were sent in by the current owner of TWO of the original Torinos plus one of the Ford-built Replicas. The Real shown above is in need of some repair work, is still powered by it's 460-V8, and has a bench front seat. In the same pic, to the left, can be seen a small portion of the other REAL S&H car he owns. It was wrecked years ago, lost it's 460 and is in need of much more work. By contrast, the other pic above shows his gorgeous replica that was built by Ford.

, also: Another Angle
1969-1971. Car: Modified British-Ford Granada.
S.H.A.D.O.'s Commander Straker drove this thing during the short-lived TV series. Previously, this and other cars seen in the series were used in a previous film project, dressed a bit different, also by UFO's creator, Gerry Andersen...........[under construction]

Vanishing Point (1997)
Also: Battered Challenger, Trashed Charger, Muscle-Cops
13MB MOV of the film's commercial!
1997. Car: 1970 Challenger R/T 426 HEMI,4spd.
This TV-remake stars Viggo Mortenson as a very different 'Kowalski'. A poor film with a poor script about a silly race to get home in time to be with his wife during his child's birth.
Jason Priestly's fake accent was horrible, Mortensen's acting is as stiff as the bulldozer he hits in the end (but given his good performances in 'Crimson Tide' and the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, I'll blame this performance on lack of motivation), and the plot was so ridiculous, it's insulting.
And, actually, I do give FOX's 'V.P.' a LITTLE credit... for bringing back the black Charger from 'Bullitt'...a neat touch. But one small cherry on a big pile of doo-doo is NOT an ice cream sundae, y'know? Wanna see the real thing...the ORIGINAL? Go to the MOVIES section.
12/9/98- Two new pics of each car in rough shape.

Viper

1994-1999. Cars: stock 1994 Dodge Viper and Custom-built 'Viper-Defender' (full custom on stretched Viper chassis)
This show lasted about 12 episodes...I gave up after 3, so what do I know! If nothing else, the car was sharp looking, and the computer graphics used for it's rolling transformations were wild.
8-18-96- Finally a pic...and lots of info!
The show aired on NBC in 1994 from January to the end of March. Twelve episodes aired, but never repeated. It cost more than 1.75 million an episode.
Two purpose built cars were constructed. One for high-speed chase scenes and one for off-road scenes. Both vehicles have automatic transmissions and Mopar Crate 360 V-8's. Each car is built on a Dodge Viper Chassis, stretched by 15 inches. The car has several onboard weapons which are functional include a grapling hook, battering rams, and rocket launcher (launches fireworks).
Paramount, who produced the show, received several cars from Chrysler. The show was set in the 'near future' so many Chrysler Concept cars made cameo appearences in the show, including the Plymouth Prowler, Chrysler Portofino, Plymouth Slingshot, and Dodge Epic Minivan.

Cancelled by NBC in July of 1994, production of the show was suspended and the props were stored. In 1995, the show was put back into active status by Paramount. By late 1995, the show had added cast members and filming began early 1996. The show returned fall 1996 in syndication with the new cast. Joe Nipote reprised his role as Frank Xavier Waters. The filming takes place in Alberta, Canada.
One memorable sequence from the 'first' season was the final chase scene in Episode 4, 'The Return of Alec Conner'. In it, a wild chase is on between the Viper Defender and a 1994 Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo. The chase ends as the Stealth slams into a barracade and flies off a bridge to land in the aqueduct below.
A good web page devoted to the show is at http://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu/~bmg95960/viper/main.html.

Wheels
, Also: Under Construction
1978 Car: Customized 1968 AMC Javelin.
This Television mini-series, written by 'Airport' author Arthur Hailey, is said to be a thinly disguised telling of the story behind Lee Iacocca's creation of the Ford Mustang...heavily spiced-up for the viewer's benefit. However, the story also has strong elements of the Bricklin SV-1's battles to produce a 'safer' car with racy styling including gull-wing doors. The car itself, a custom Javelin, actually looks like a Mustang variation from some angles.

Wheels of Terror

1990 (USA Cable)Car: 1971? Dodge Charger.
Gawd, does this one STINK! Essentially a rip-off of the far-superior 'The Car', this film brings the story of a mysterious, murderous car out of the 1970s and into the 1990s by putting a child abductor spin on things. It stars Joanna Cassidy as a mom and school bus driver terrorized by an unseen driver of the battered-and-bruised Mopar...which has had it's grille squashed a bit to make the car appear more sinister. To fill the gapping holes in the script, the car scenes were severely slow-motioned to fill time and make us all wish he would just hit US, the viewers, and get it all over with. You may THINK you've seen films where slo-mo was over-abused, but this one takes the cake, hands down. Only the most diehard of car-film buffs can stomach the whole thing in one sitting...it's the perfect primer to get you ready for FOX's horrible 'Vanishing Point' remake (see above).

1972 Javelins

'????' unknown television pilot, 1996?. Car: 1972 AMC Javelin.
6/10/96- A T.V. pilot was recently filmed in Atlanta featuring a black 1972 Javelin as the star's ride. There were actually 2 cars prepared for them, since the script called for a lumber yard accident befalling one car. Luckily the damage was minor to the roof and a broken rear glass... Hope to have more info soon as to when and where it will be shown. Keep your eyes peeled!
6/11/96- A word from the builder of the 2 Javelins mentioned: "The nice one which we hooked them up on... was...rust-free, driven frequently, 360-V8, mildcam, headers, edelbrock, 727, posi, orange, black interior, BFG's, factory ralley wheels with trim rings,120,000 miles. It had fat tires and wheels added to match car below......The rough one started with a 401-727 which spun a bearing within an hour after they bought it..we replaced the 401 with a 304 auto, other equipment included probably 10 gals of bondo, 8" mags on front, 10" on rear with monster tires (Mickey Thompson I think) air shocks, ugly gold paint, black interior, A rare perfect AMC ram air hood and rear spoiler.. This car is... really rough inside and out, plus it now has a damaged roof courtesy of special effects. The first car is still in Atlanta..."
MORE TO COME(?)
8/2/99- AMC Content: The Javelins.
