1985, 1988, 1989 Car: 1981 DeLorean
All three films of this trilogy feature this DeLorean-turned-Time Machine. They
bought six of them for the original movie. Three were built, running cars and
the other three were cut up for studio use (a real crime as they only built
8,543). When the last movie was made, a rough one was found for $4000 and used
for the train collision scene. The time travel stuff involved a lot of army
surplus and a very large component of the equipment was a hubcap from a 60's
Dodge Polara (look real close). There is an article about the construction of
the cars in a 1984 issue of Popular Mechanics.
AMC Content: In the first film, Marty and Jennifer sit in the town square, waiting for her father to pick her up. Across the street is a 'new' '84 Jeep Cherokee Chief. Jennifer's father arrives in a 'new' '84 AMC Eagle 4WD wagon, and then a 'new' '84 Jeep Grand Wagoneer passes thru the scene. Coincidence? Not likely as these three vehicles made up the bulk of AMC's 1984 model line up... an obvious, pre-arranged 'commercial' slipped into the film. Humorously, here's a little something I noticed on the 2002 DVD release: Jennifer's dad drives that gold Eagle wagon with woodgrain, right? Consider that when the time machine returns to 1985, it does so around 10PM, and we can assume most businesses on the town square are closed. Yet in the parking lot on the square is the gold Eagle wagon. Now, what business on the square is likely to be open that Jenn's dad is visiting? Hmm….how about that porno theatre that you might have noticed earlier in the film as Jennifer left with dad (look over Marty's shoulder after Jenn leaves). Hmm!!
In the second film, the Eagle is shown wrecked in Jenn's
driveway at night. An AMC Hornet wagon was used (note two round headlamps
instead of four rectangular lights).

1989, 1992, 1995 Cars: 'Barris Kustoms' custom cars.
The 1989/1992 version is built on 1974 Chevrolet Impala chassis.
The first Batmobile built for feature films (the '66 car was
built for TV, then used in the film later) is loaded with 'wonderful toys'. Machine
guns rise from the fenders, the nose drops bombs, and it can protect itself
under an automatic pleated armor shell (which changes markedly in the second
film). In 'Returns', it displays side winglets that can knock evil doers off
their stilts, a plunger that lifts the car to change direction while not in
motion, and it can even shed it's side portions, tucking it's wheels tightly to
squeeze through unrealistically narrow alleys (tho how it spawns replacements
for the shedded parts is a mystery).
AMC Content: In the first film, gray '72 and '74 AMC Matador sedan taxi
cabs are seen passing by a few times in the film's opening scenes of the
unlucky tourists. A '78 Concord in gray is also spotted. As Batman flees after
rescuing Vicki from the Joker's trap at the museum, one of the Joker's goons is
driving what appears to be a '67 AMC Rebel 4-door. Later, Alexander Knox and
Vicki Vale arrive at the Joker's parade in a blue '78 AMC Concord.

Jake and Elwood tooled around in this Ex-Police car during Jake's brief period
of freedom.
Together, they attempt to 'get the band back together' in order to raise money
for the orphanage where they grew up. As history records, all Hell broke loose
as the police pursued them....wrecking more cop cars than in any one movie
before or since.
My Favorite part? The marvelously simple way Elwood starts the first big pile
up...."Jake, I've gotta pull over." and he swerves off the roadway
and down an embankment. The cops try the same thing with dismal results.

Other vehicles featured include a Pontiac Grand Prix owned
by Jake's ex-girlfriend/stalker, the camper that goes for a swim, the Ford
Pinto wagon owned by the Illinois Nazi's leader and Murph's pink Cadillac.

14MB MOV of the chase!
1968. Cars: 1968 Charger 440 and 1968 Mustang GT 390.
Steve McQueen's character senses he's being followed and quickly turns left,
leaving his pursuers momentarily caught in traffic. He doubles-back around and
closes on the Charger from behind. Realizing they've been spotted, they attempt
to outrun him.
So begins what is widely considered the greatest car chase ever filmed (not my
opinion). Both cars careen thru the streets and highways of San Francisco at speeds
up to 110mph..for real. This Charger proves it by displaying some serious
leaning in the turns. My only gripe about this chase is the use of the same
chase sequence, granted from different views, to extend the length of the
chase. Watch as they barrel downhill, passing the white Pontiac LeMans that's
turning, then the green Beetle, then turn left, cutting off the Cadillac...3
times! Others usually point to the loss of 6 hubcaps, but that's incorrect, as
the first three are the same one!
6/28/96- The Charger was destroyed in the chase-ending crash, but the Mustang
was dusted off and sold for $2500. The Charger was meant to strike several gas
pumps seen exploding during the crash, but missed, and passed well behind them
(seen quite clearly in the film). Both cars were built by Max Balchowski, and
were driven by Carey Loftin, Bud Ekins (who also laid down the mortorcycle in
this chase) and Steve McQueen himself.
7/11/96- The Mustang suffered from a poorly located oil drain plug as it kept
getting torn off when the car would slam down on the pavement. Also, note the
skid marks on the road left during previous takes.
8/5/96- All new pics of both cars.
9/17/96- Another visitor reports two Mustangs were used...one destroyed in the
chase-ending slide into the ditch, the other sold off.
12/9/96- Yet another visitor reports the Mustang has no side mirrors early in
the film, but suddenly has two in time for the big chase. Check it out!
5/7/98- Just added a large (14MB!) MOV file for your viewing pleasure! It's a
heavily-editted version of the chase scene, but most of the best scenes
remain...check it out above!

1977 Car: 1969-71 Lincoln Mark III, modified by Barris Kustoms
This movie is often compared to 'Christine', and I wouldn't doubt at all that
Stephen King's book was heavily influenced by this story. In this film, no real
explanation is given for the car's origins or purpose. It begins with the Car
running two cyclists down near little Santa Ynez, New Mexico. Soon after, a
hitch-hiker is run over.....4 times! Our first detailed look at the car comes
as it disrupts a grammar-school marching band's practice, chasing everyone into
a cemetary...which the Car will not enter. It races off to terrorize the police
force, shoving one car over a cliff, and flattening two others before
disappearing. The finale, involving rocks, dynamite and a little game of
'chicken', hints the vehicle was driven by Satan himself (watch for the 'face'
in the flames).
Six cars were built for the film, one steel 'principle' car, and five fiberglass copies. Only one (presumably the steel car) survived and was sold in the early 80s to an unknown buyer.
Here are some pics and specs for the Mark III in 'stock' form: Exterior 1 Exterior 2 Interior
Base price (1969) $6,758
Wheelbase 117.2"
Overall length 216.1"
Curb weight (1969) 4,762 lbs
Fuel capacity 25.5 gal
Engine 460cid 4v, 365 hp, 500 lb/ft torque
8-1-99- This film is now
available, digitally restored, on home video...both VHS and DVD, widescreen
and standard versions!!! I got my copy at a nearby 'Suncoast' for a mere $12.99 (widescreen;
standard runs about $9.99), but it should available almost anywhere that stocks
a large supply of videos. Get yours before this cult classic disappears for
another 22 years!! See the video box art above (shown first is the standard VHS
which is a normal cardboard sleeve-box while the second is the widescreen
version's art, which is a two-sided paper insert slipped behind a clear plastic
cover on the tape's silver, plastic snap-case...worth the few extra bucks!).
8-2-99- AMC Content: A '72 AMC Matador police cruiser is first seen in
the Police garage when Luke goes to the trunk of another car to sneak a few
gulps of booze. The Matador is also at the Parade practice as the cop rests on
the hood. Later, this same car chases the 'Car', and is shoved over a cliff by
it, exploding on it's way down. Also seen early, in the school parking lot, and
later at the band practice, is a silver AMC Pacer.

Christine
Also: Sitting pretty, The heat is on
1983. Car: 1958 Plymouth Fury.
One thing people always say is that Christine was 'possessed'...untrue!
Possession requires that at some point, you were NOT possessed. Christine, from
the day of assembly, was...ALIVE! She was 'born' there at the factory, and her
fierce loyalty to her owners caused them to be equally loyal to her..to the
point of insanity. Sure, this is all weird, but that's the book version of how
it works. A very wordy book, but worth it for the better death scenes that occur.
She's infinitely more merciless on paper.. And have I got a few scenes for a
sequel! Want to read one?
7-10-96- Twelve '58 Fury's were destroyed making this film...a travesty given
it's low production numbers.
8-4-96- New pics from the film and poster.
6-23-97- I'm told the scene of the burned Christine backing into it's stall at
Darnell's uses a FOUR DOOR car! I'll have to check that out!

Death Race 2000
1975. Cars: Various customs.
In this film, the future has David Carradine (Kung Fu) as Frankenstein, the
race-scared champion of a twisted race where points are earned for running down
innocent bystanders. According to a visitor, "Frankenstein's car is a
modified VW based kit- either a Sterling or a Cimbria SS, more likely a
Cimbria. An unmodified Sterling is what Frankenstein (now president) and the
navigator leave in at the end of the movie. Nero's car is a Fiat 850 Spyder. In
some shots, you can see the fuel filler and the air intakes for the rear
mounted engine/radiator behind his head." My personal fave scene is the
line of nurses and doctors getting whacked.......so cool!
6-10-96- I watched this dismal film again this weekend. The 'Bull' car and
Stallone's car both appear to be typical Manta kit-car bodies on VW chassis.
The little 'Nazi' car is obviously a Kharmann Ghia.
Also of note...Did you know that among David Carradine and Sly Stallone, good
ol' GOPHER from the 'Love Boat' has a part in this thing?!? Fred Grandy, now a US
Senator (or Congressman) plays the little nazi navigator!

Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry
The ’69 Charger R/T…………..the ’69 Charger………………the ’68 Charger R/T
(Above are the three cars used to portray Larry’s Charger in the film)
7MB MOV of the big ending!
1974. Cars: 1969 Charger R/T 440, 1966 Impala.
This Charger is, by far, my favorite movie car. It's fast, it's ferocious, it's
flashy....all it's missing is fuel- efficient! It's funny to note this car
barely travels 50 feet before it takes its first damage, tearing off a cop car
door. Soon enough it's hitting everything in sight, including a helicopter.
Heck, you thought the Bandit Trans Am was the first to wail on a row of
mailboxes? NOT! The two most impressive shots here (to me, anyway) involve the
Impala when it gets ridiculous hang time at the drawbridge, narrowly avoiding
another car on landing, and a high speed left turn for the Charger with the
chopper right behind...so low, the blades nearly whack the ground! In fact, it
is the helicopter sequence that provides the most anxious moments. Nobody would
allow the insane flying seen here to occur on public streets today- it would
have to be all CGI work. If you can find it, BUY IT!
6/10/96- In at least one scene, a '68 Charger is used [no
split in grille]...look for it shortly before the one police car flys into a
lake. Otherwise, the makers of this film did an excellent job with the
continuity of damage to this car. Very little of the 'Now you see it, now you
don't' dents.
4/9/97- Here's a pair of WAV files from the film: 'Bad
Start', $80 Windshield
6/23/96- On a sad note, I learned last week that Adam Roarke, who played Deke
in this film, passed away last year due to a sudden heart attack. In recent years,
he'd run 'The Movie Studio in Las Colinas' acting school in Dallas, Texas (one
of his pupils was Lou Diamond Phillips).
5/17/98- Just added a large (7MB!) MOV file for your viewing pleasure! It's a
heavily-editted version of the helicopter chase scene and train crash. Check it
out above!
January 2006- In the spring of 2005, this film
finally became available on DVD in widescreen format! There is a director’s
commentary track and a making-of featurette that are priceless. It is a MUST
OWN item! A common mistake is that folks recall the car as being yellow, but in
fact, it’s a light green. The DVD is restored properly to show off the car’s
actual color. I recently decided to dissect the film to detail the Charger as
much as possible. I’ve identified numerous differences between the three Dodge
Chargers used in the film. All three cars are shown in the new photos, above.

Steven Speilberg's directorial debut starred Dennis Weaver ('McCloud') as a

way to make it stop?

1986 Car: Ferrari-styled Kit Car
The car used in the movie was manufactured by Modena Design and Development of
El Cajon, California. It's a hand-built production sports car and each one
takes about six months to build. The car is not a Ferrari, but Modena's Classic
GT250 borrows heavily from the looks of the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California
Spyder. Modena's car also does not carry a Ferrari logo, but the prospective
customer may add one if he/she wishes. The car body is composed of fiberglass
hand-laid into a single mold and the 5-liter Ford V8 engine propels the car
from 0-60 in less than six seconds. The car is also custom tailored to the
customer's liking- they can pick the type of leather, paint, engine, audio
system, and suspension.
